Local elections 2024: Constitutional Court confirms PAICV victory in São Lourenço dos Órgãos by one vote
The Constitutional Court (TC) today confirmed the victory of the PAICV in the São Lourenço dos Órgãos chamber by rejecting an appeal by the MpD to validate in its favor a vote considered null by the General Counting Assembly.
According to a source from the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), the TC's decision was taken unanimously, confirming the decision of the General Counting Assembly giving victory to the PAICV in the local elections of December 1st for the Municipal Council of São Lourenço dos Órgãos (Santiago) by one vote.
According to the agreement of the general counting notice consulted by Inforpress, the PAICV obtained 1,608 votes, the Movement for Democracy (MpD) 1,607 and the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID) 54 votes.
The PAICV elected three councilors, including the new mayor, Euclides Cabral, and the MpD elected two councilors, including the outgoing mayor Carlos Vasconcelos, who has led the municipality since 2016.
For the municipal assembly, PAICV obtained 1,601 votes, MpD 1,585 votes and UCID 67, that is, PAICV elected seven municipal representatives and MpD received six.
Regarding the PAICV's appeal, which also requests that a nullified vote be validated in favor of the party, the TC has not yet decided, according to a source from this party who told Inforpress.
In São Lourenço dos Órgãos, of the 5,802 registered voters, a total of 3,235 exercised their right to vote and 2,449 abstained.
